Until the Next Big Thing Happens

Just when you are in the midst of finishing something you have worked on for a very long time, do you ever get the feeling that the next BIG thing is about to happen?

It feels good to have finally updated my website to be as accessible as I am able to make it.

I've already begun the work to do the same with my ebooks. Like so many things in life, it's taken a bit longer than I anticipated. Initially, the original book release versions were based on print format, which meant my illustrated books were built in a fixed-layout structure. After quite a bit of testing, I've decided that to create accessible ebooks with pictures, I will pair flowable text with inline images. So, back to the drawing board, literally and figuratively.

Along the way, I've learned how to add code to EPUB files and how to add my own CSS code to customize a website template design. You know—change it a bit here, tweak it a tad there. It's all about syntax. One extra blank space, omitting a comma or forgetting the closing bracket, and BINGO—syntax error. It's an old word from my report writing days. Lotus 1-2-3, followed by Crystal Reporting. If a field existed, I would mold and shape data into all manners of analysis and summarization.

It's a very different skillset from writing creatively, but strangely enough, there are similarities.

They both require structure and organization. A definite beginning, lots of interesting data in the middle and finish off with a satisfactory ending.

Gathering. Researching. Problem-solving. Creative solutions. It's all there in both types of applications.

I've been able to handle most of the hurdles so far. I admit, my patience almost wore itself out.

After testing this and that, I'm much more confident now going forward with converting all of my other books and should be able to meet my latest re-publishing schedule.

That is, until the next big thing happens…
