No One Else Can Ever Know

No one else can ever know

No one else can ever know about
the expensive smelling man
who wore trashy earrings
that sparkled like real diamonds.

Inspired by writer Austin Kleon, and his blackout newspaper process, I wanted to give the exercise a go myself. Unfortunately, I usually have printed flyers on hand, not newspapers. So, I went scrounging around in my "writing" folder on my computer for some raw material.

I found a file called My Little Darlings. No, it's not a story. It's a page and a half of text which I had cut from a novel I had begun writing many years ago. It didn't fit that particular storyline at the time, but I could't bring myself to trash it permanently.

Anyway, I thought why not try out this process and see what I end up with?

Instead of printing it off and using a black marker, I played around with the blackout process using rectangle shapes. Once I was satisfied, I took a screenshot of the results.

No one else can ever know about the expensive smelling man who wore trashy earrings that sparkled like real diamonds.

That is NOT something I would have written otherwise.
